Aluminium Shear
Crane Enfield Metals in Penrith NSW were persevering with a very poorly designed Control System for their Aluminium Shear operation.
This system was supplied and commissioned by a very high-profile company. After a tragic accident they called Sapeca in to design a better, safer Control System to replace the existing one.
The client's choice of PLC was Allen Bradley SLC500 connected to an Allen Bradley PanelView 1200e Display and another PLC via the Data Highway. By the way - we find Allen Bradley PLC programming software one of the best to use but it is expensive.
Since this set of machines suffered operator intervention from time to time due to the nature of the product (200 mm diameter aluminium log) we employed 'State Machine' logic for the control algorithms so that automatic operation is resumed on the fly regardless of the state the machine was left in.
By optimising the timing of certain devices within the system we were able to increase throughput by some 30%. The resulting machine runs smoothly to everyone's delight - the operator, Crane Enfield management and Work Cover.
